2. By Project. Some grant writers prefer to charge on a project basis, after a thorough assessment of the full range and scope of the job. Depending on the length and complexity of the grant document, project fees can range anywhere from $1,000 to $8,000. Rates may differ based on the source of grant - e.g. a lower rate for grant applications to be submitted to foundation or corporation; and a higher rate if applicant is seeking state or federal grants.

3. By Commission. Paid based on a certain percentage of funding requested. Depending on the funding source and other factors compensation can be tied to success in securing the grant, and will be paid anywhere from 1% to 5% of the total grant awarded.
